  • 06-1cHave you examined bias in data that may occur due to hardware?
    • There have been unending controversies over racial bias in devices collecting medical data necessary for diagnosis, such as thermometers and pulse oximeters. The truth is that racial disparities were not considered in designing these hardware devices.

    • Procedures for overcoming the technical limitations of devices can be developed, but this was the cause of unethical behaviors and damages in the past. Be cautious in the process of solving mechanical bias to avoid such behaviors and damages in consideration of the interaction between the medical device and the patient.

    • Some examples of racial bias in data are imaging data, including chest X-rays, leg and limb X-rays, chest CT scans, and mammograms. There is a need to devise a plan to mitigate hardware bias even for the data cleansing process, and attempts are being made to mitigate bias in data.
